讲座简介:

Seeing the world around us becomes difficult when the ambient light is low (or for people with visual deficits in general). Traditional studies in perceptual learning reveal that behavioral performance on some basic visual tasks can be improved following intensive training. But this improvement is usually time-consuming and is limited to the trained visual properties. Here we explore how to induce improvements in perception and awareness rapidly, and their mechanisms and properties. In a series of experiments, we show that mixing easy trials with hard trials can help improve perception and performance in hard trials. This improvement reflects a combination of a low-level, shape priming mechanism and a high-level, attention mechanism. Further, mixture-induced improvements are found be both transient (dependent on the presence of easy trials) and sustained (persisting without the presence of easy trials). While the transient effect is ubiquitous and has a large effect on awareness, the sustained effect is limited to 1/3 of subjects and has a much smaller effect on awareness. These results highlight multiple mechanisms of rapid improvements of perception and awareness as enabled by the mixture of easy trials, as well as their distinct timescales and properties.
