讲座简介

A basic function of human visual perception and memory is the ability to recognize and locate objects in the environment. Although the visual processing of 2D visual information has been vigorously studied over the past decades, it remains unclear how the processing of 3D depth information differs from that of 2D visual information. Here we present two studies that investigated the storage and function specificity of working memory for 3D depth information. In Study 1, we conducted five experiments in various 3D contexts, including large-scale virtual environments, to investigate whether memory of object depth location could affect object recognition. We found that the perceptual judgments on object feature could be affected by changes in its ordinal depth, but not by changes in its absolute metric depth. Additionally, the bias was asymmetric – changes in object feature did bias the judgments on metric depth location, but not if its depth order had changed. Our findings suggests that ordinal depth serves the function of object recognition, but absolute metric depth location does not. In Study 2, we systematically investigated how absolute metric depth and ordinal depth are encoded, maintained, and consolidated in WM. Our results indicate separate storage mechanisms for the two types of depth information: absolute depth, especially fine information, is poorly maintained in a fragile visual store, whereas relative depth, which is encoded coarsely, involves both a robust verbal store and a visual store.
