Social media serves as platforms for a variety of things now such as building social network, online shopping, news, etc. Generation Z (Gen Z) has their entire cognitive life under the exposure of social media. This study explores the influence social media has on Gen Z from the perspective of Gen Z, specifically from an emotion angle. Participants were interviewed and completed three questionnaires. Results showed Gen Z’s standards, rules and goals correlated with their emotion expressivity. Furthermore, Gen Z’s social media activity was linked to their emotion expressivity, which related to their emotion regulation strategy use and self-esteem. As a result, it is important to understand how Gen Z perceives social media, which will ultimately explain partial variance in emotion expressivity and emotion regulation.
