报告简介:

Due to the disappearance of word boundaries within Chinese sentences and the ambiguousness of word segmentation/identification during the reading of Chinese, it is still intensely debated about how Chinese readers guide their eyes during natural reading. Until now, there are currently 2 theoretical models accounting for how readers of Chinese select their saccade targets: (1) by guiding their eyes to some specific saccade targets (i.e., the default-targeting model) and (2) by adjusting their saccade amplitudes based on the amount of parafoveal lexical processing completed (i.e., the dynamic-adjustment model) (Liu, Reichle, & Li, 2015, 2016). Although the latter hypothesis got increasing empirical supports, one current evidence showed Chinese readers will move their eyes to default position when parafoveal word boundaries emerge (Liu, Yu, Fu, Li, Duan, & Reichle, 2019). To give the strongest test for both above hypotheses, two eye-movement experiments were finished by requiring participants to read natural Chinese sentences composed of uniform-length (i.e., 2-character) words, with the difference whether or not participants were informed sentences were always constituted by uniform-length words between both experiments. We found fixation position distributions on words or nonword ROIs both approximated be uniform, suggesting that Chinese readers did not target their eyes to any default position even word lengths were fixed. These results of the current study provide strong evidence that there is no preferred viewing location in Chinese reading as long as word boundaries are not visually demarcated. Implications are discussed with eye movement control in Chinese reading and models for eye-movement control in reading
