报告简介:
An old saying goes that “puffing oneself up at one’s own cost”. There are some people who are financially deprived but still ‘cant wait’ to spend the rest of their money. Borrowing the fluid compensation theory from compensatory consumption field, we explored the compensatory mechanism underlying this phenomenon. Two experiments were conducted to test whether financially deprived individuals will be more likely to show generosity in public. Participants were asked to recall a scene when they compared themselves to their peers and felt financially worse off (deprived condition) or better off (privileged condition), at first. Then participants’ generosity in groups was measured by willingness to help classmates in class (study 1) and public goods game (study 2). The results showed that 1) people who experienced financial deprivation were more generous in groups; 2) degree of generosity increased depended on one’s money attitude. In details, for those who regarded money as the most important symbol of success or power, when they experienced financial deprivation, they showed significantly higher generosity in groups. These studies were consistent with the hypothesis. More studies regarding the elaborated mechanisms are needed in the future.
