Locomotor interception of a moving target is challenging because actors need to coordinate their movement with the target’s movement. How is locomotor interception visually guided? According to pursuit strategy, the actor directly moves toward the current location of the target; according to constant target-heading strategy, the actor moves about so as to keep the target in a constant direction relative to the heading direction; according to constant bearing strategy, the actor keeps the target in a constant direction relative to an allocentric reference axis. In addition, it has been proposed that interception tasks could be guided based on prediction of the target’s trajectory, actors’ predictive eye movements are usually regarded as evidence of this prediction- or model-based control. In spite of numerous empirical investigations, it is still unclear how people perform locomotor interception. To tackle this question, we devised a car-steering task in virtual environments, manipulated the availability of visual information about allocentric reference frames, and examined participants’ steering and eye movements. We did not find any obvious pattern of predictive eye movements. The results indicate that locomotor interception is better explained by the constant target-heading strategy based on current visual information.
